Barcelona has lived, with greater intensity in the last thirty years, a great process of urban transformation that her has consolidated as the model exemplary in this type of practice. That is why the City initiative to City Barcelona FAD Award has opened the call for the award that recognises some of the urban processes more innovative, sustainable and beneficial for the citizens of the world. In the third edition, this initiative wants to reopen the debate on the global transformation of cities. In the last edition were nineteen cities in the region of Saxony Anhalt in Germany and its initiative “Shrinking cities”. It was implement innovative urban solutions to cities affected by depopulation with ecological strategies, demolition of buildings and economic development. In its third edition, the City initiative to City Barcelona FAD Award has opened the call for the award which recognises the urban processes more innovative – public and private – in the last year. As in previous years, the aim of the award is to highlight social, architectural or urban projects that have contributed to improve the quality of life of the citizenry. That is why the significance shall be assessed by the project in the city, innovation, sustainability and the effective participation of society in its development. As explains the President of the FAD, Miquel Espinet, apart from recognizing the urban processes, the City to City projects the image of the Catalan capital in the world, with its “deep” experience of urban transformation on their backs. Thus, the FAD wants to open the debate on the global transformation of the cities for the benefit of urban scenes more inclusive. Of large cities to reconstruction of disadvantaged neighborhoods the nominations, which are for people, institutions or groups with knowledge about the reality of the cities in different from the planet, are more varied and are located in major European cities such as in problematic neighbourhoods. It is the case of some of the finalists of last year, as the projects “The high line park” in New York or “Favela painting” in Rio de Janeiro, that combine historical recovery and social inclusion. With regard to European and American cities, has also been recognized as finalists the “District heating” Helsinki, a system of central heat distribution generated by demand for residential or commercial heating, as well as clean air strategies applied to one of the most polluted cities of the United States, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
