More than 1,000 footballers have worn the first team shirt for Barcelona Football Club throughout its 109 years of history.
The players from abroad (as well as those of Spanish nationality) have always had a great influence on the club’s history, and have marked the most brilliant Catalan ages. Founded by a group of foreigners based in Barcelona, the team was originally formed by mostly English, Swiss and German players. Most historians believe that the Hungarian Ladislao Kubala, playing in the 1950s, was the first major figure of international stature who campaigned in Barcelona. But it was only in the 70s, when Spanish football regularized the participation of foreign players that the club properly began to host major international figures. Since then with help from various players from around the world, FC Barcelona has gone on to win the most prestigious individual trophy of world football.
Four players from the club have won the FIFA World Player of the Year award, given anually to those deemed to be the best footballers in the world (Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho), and five players have been awarded the Golden Ball that acknowledges the best players in European football (Luis Suarez, Johan Cruyff, Hristo Stoichkov, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho). In addition, the club has been home to many players with considerable international distinction: Allan Simonsen, Hansi Krankl, Diego Armando Maradona, Gary Lineker, Michael Laudrup, Luis Figo and Samuel Eto’o to name some examples.
FC Barcelona has been historically, next to Real Madrid, the club that has enjoyed the best footballers in Spain, and one of the groups that has helped nurture the national football team of Spain. The FC Barcelona player who has played more games with the selection is that the goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, with 126 matches, is also the Spanish player who has participated in more matches of the selection. Luis Enrique and Nadal are, with 62 matches each, the two other Barcelona players with more international gimped.
The players who have played more games for FC Barcelona are Migueli (548), Carles Rexach (452), and Guillermo Amor (421). Those officers have won more titles are Guillermo Amor (19), Jose Ramon Alexanko (17), Albert Ferrer (17), and Josep Guardiola (16). And the players that have marked most goals are Paulino Alcántara (357), Josep Samitier (319), and Cesar Rodriguez (301).
